Surprisingly, somehow, the xt is better suited for that. There is a pretty big gap in trail ability between the 690 and 500 though. The 500 is really a dirtbike with lights, and can handle ANYTHING any other dirtbike can handle. The 690 is a good bit heavier. Honestly you could replace your bmw AND the XT with the 690.
